The G20, officially known as the Group of Twenty, consists of 19 individual countries and the European Union. These member countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The G20 was established in 1999 in response to the financial crises of the late 1990s, particularly impacting East and Southeast Asia.
Leaders from the world’s top economies will gather in India for a two-day G20 summit, beginning on September 9. The capital city of Delhi is ready to welcome delegates to the event. The main venue, Bharat Mandapam at Pragati Maidan, has been adorned with illuminations, flowers, and festive decorations. A 28-foot-tall Nataraja statue gleams at night. India has adopted the optimistic slogan “One Earth, One Family, One Future” for the G20 Summit 2023. The G20, representing about 85% of global GDP and two-thirds of the world’s population, comprises 19 countries and the European Union.
To ensure the success of the summit, the India Meteorological Department has installed an additional automatic weather station near Pragati Maidan, the G20 Summit venue. This station will provide specialized and real-time weather forecasts to accommodate the high-level event. The weather office will issue tailored weather updates accessible through a dedicated webpage on the IMD website, offering precise information on air temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, and rainfall. This data will be updated at 15-minute intervals for the most accurate and up-to-date weather information.

Security measures are in place, with 1,000 police personnel deployed for the safety of delegates arriving at Hindon Airport in Uttar Pradesh. Personnel will also be stationed on nearby rooftops, and residents have been asked to avoid terraces during delegate movements.
Under India’s G20 Presidency, the theme “One Earth, One Family, One Future” aims to promote a sense of global unity. The Development Working Group (DWG) focuses on discussing developmental issues in Developing Countries (DC), Least Developed Countries (LDC), and Island Countries (Small Island Developing States/SIDS). The DWG provides a platform for G-20 member countries to prioritize multilateralism, share growth-promoting solutions, and work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
India’s G20 Presidency commenced on December 1, 2022, taking over from Indonesia and convening the G20 Leaders’ Summit for the first time in 2023. India is dedicated to democracy and multilateralism, striving to find global solutions for the well-being of all and embodying the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ or ‘World is One Family.’

For India, the G20 Presidency marks the beginning of “Amritkaal,” a 25-year period from the 75th anniversary of its independence in August 2022 to its centenary of independence. Under India’s Presidency, a new working group on Disaster Risk Reduction will be established to promote collective efforts within the G20, facilitating multidisciplinary research and the exchange of best practices in disaster risk reduction.
